#What is X Ray Scanner?

X-rays are most often used in medicine as a diagnostic tool when external examination of the body proves insufficient.

They can be used to produce images of bones, organs, and tissues, revealing disorders such as fractures, tumors, ulcers, blood clots, and degenerative changes such as osteoarthritis.

The first X-ray taken was of his wife’s hand. Today, hundreds of millions of X-ray tests are carried out each year. One estimate put the annual global figure at 1.2 billion medical X-rays and 3.5 million dental X-rays.

#How Does X Ray Scanner Work?

Beams of low-dose X-rays are passed through an X-ray tube and are directed towards the part of the body which is being examined.

These X-rays pass through the tissues and cast images, which are essentially shadows, onto photographic film or a fluorescent screen.

#What Do X Ray Scanner Show?

The X-ray image (radiograph) shows anatomical details of the part of the body that is being examined. In this way, it can show up any structural changes or damage.

Each part of the body is shown up in a different way, depending on a number of X-rays that it absorbs. The denser the tissue, the more efficiently it absorbs X-rays, so preventing them from reaching the photographic plate.

Hence the tissue will appear whiter on the radiograph. Empty space appears black. Bones show up clearly on X-ray images because they are so dense. Soft body tissue, skin, fat and muscle absorb X-rays to a lesser extent, and so show up less clearly.

For this reason, viewing internal organs such as the intestine and blood vessels requires them to be high-, lighted by a special dye which is opaque to X-rays. These contrast media or dyes are introduced into the body, orally or by injection or enema.

#What happens during an X Ray Scanning?

Before undergoing any X-ray, you will be asked to remove certain items of clothing and jewelry, which may produce an image on the X-ray.

You may also have to remove other objects, such as hair grips, dentures or a wig.

Depending on the area of your body being examined, you will need to assume various positions while sitting, standing or lying down on an X-ray table.

You will need to keep very still during the procedure to avoid any blurring of the image.

When you are in the correct position, and the film and X-ray tube are both ready, the radiographer (a person trained in using the X-ray equipment) goes behind a protective screen and presses a button to take the X-ray.

Once the film has been developed, it is interpreted by the radiologist. It usually takes only a fraction of a second to take an X-ray. When the test involves just a simple X-ray image, there is usually no discomfort.

However, some special procedures to help parts of the body show up more clearly on X-rays (such as barium meals or enemas) can produce a certain amount of discomfort.

#Is X Ray Scanner Dangerous?

X-rays have the potential to damage living cells, especially those that are dividing rapidly. For this reason, X-rays can be used in radiotherapy (radiation treatment) to destroy malignant tumors.

In this procedure, high doses of radiation are accurately directed at the cancer cells in order to kill them.

However, during radiotherapy, the radiation beam is constantly being moved around so as to reduce the amount of damage that may be caused to the surrounding healthy tissues.

Diagnostic X-rays involve much lower doses of radiation that are used in radiotherapy, and any slight risk is easily outweighed by the advantage of obtaining an early diagnosis and so being able to treat any underlying disease promptly.

The main risk from diagnostic X-rays is to a developing fetus. For this reason,  X-ray examinations are not normally carried out during pregnancy, except in an emergency.

You will be asked to remove any clothing that will get in the line of the X-rays. You must also remove any objects that might produce an image on the film.

A shield may be placed over certain parts of the body, such as the reproductive organs, to protect them from radiation.

Once the radiographer has placed you in position, you must lie very still while the X-rays are taken.

For certain X-rays, you may need a special dye to be injected or swallowed to help show up the area being examined. You may also be restricted in what you can consume beforehand.


Always tell the doctor if you are pregnant, or if you think there is a possibility you might be.
If an X-ray is required, it may be necessary to shield the uterus. The effects of radiation accumulate, so it is advisable to avoid having any unnecessary X-rays.
Extra care is taken with children as they are much more sensitive to X-rays. Your personal risk from exposure depends on the part of the body being X-rayed and the amount of radiation you have received in the past.
